Italy World Cup Winning Coach Bearzot Dies at 83

Enzo Bearzot, who led Italy to its first World Cup triumph in 44 years in 1982, died on Tuesday in Milan at age 83 after being ill for several years.

Bearzot was Italy coach in 1975 and led the team in 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cups.

The World Cup 1982 in Spain, Italy beat West Germany 3-1 in the final after defeating Argentina and Brazil in the second round and quarter finals in Poland. 

It 'was the third Italian title after the success of the Cup in 1934 and '38. Italy wins fourth in 2006.

Prime Minister of Italy and AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi praised Bearzot.

"I share your deep sorrow for the death of Enzo Bearzot, the coach of the unforgettable Italian national team," he said in a statement. "With his skills, he joined the group of players who won the Italy's third World Cup in Spain in 1982. "
