Google Presents New Tool Global Market Finder

Search engine giant Google announced today the launch of a new tool for Global Market Finder in India, which allows advertisers to find new markets for their products abroad.

“The new tool is designed to help Indian businesses expand their business and reach out to potential customers in international markets,” said Sridhar Seshadri.

This new tool will enable companies of all sizes to overcome traditional barriers to international expansion, such as finding the right customers, translating their websites and advertising campaigns in local languages and clients in foreign markets relevant ads, "he said.

The Global Market Finder and Google Ads for Global Advertisers would be available worldwide from advertisers in 43 languages, "he said.

“According to the recent foreign trade data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Indian export market has witnessed 37.5 per cent growth in 2010-11 fiscal, which is a standing testimony of the huge potential of this space,” he said.

Possible Do Not Text Registry

People frustrated by text messaging ads might soon have an answer to their problem. Pennsylvania State Representative Seth Grove (R-Dover) introduced legislation amending the Telemarketer Registration Act to include text messages.

Rep. Grove says the idea for the amendment came from his constituents. "I had a couple senior citizens come into the office. And they started getting text messaging advertisements and they didn't have a text messaging plan so it cost them money to receive em. And then, it usually says 'reply back STOP to stop the text messaging' and to stop it it cost them even more money."

Grove says he believes that his colleagues will support the amendment, since he has not heard any negative reaction. He says that anyone already on the Do Not Call list will receive the benefits of his legislation once it passes. It was moved out of committee with a unanimous vote May 4th and is awaiting action in the full house.

The legislation would make it illegal for companies to advertise to a telephone subscriber unless the person opts-in to the texts; the company is texting about debts, contracts or payments; the company has an established relationship with the customer over 12 months; the company is a tax-exempt non-profit; and is calling on behalf of a candidate or political party.

Another House panel hit back at DoT on 2G

While Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has given its report on the 2G spectrum scam and the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) moves fast to give its report before August-end, yet another parliamentary committee has quietly completed its probe into the irregularities in the 2G licences, issued in January 2008 by then Telecom Minister A Raja, now cooling heels in Tihar Jails here.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology has blasted the Department of Telecom (DoT) for not cancelling 74 licences for the Unified Access Services (UAS) as recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). It suspects something basically wrong with DoT in favouring the defaulters instead of punishing them.

It was shocked to note that DoT issued show-cause notices only to five or six telecom firms and that too only in March- April for the formality and referred back 64 cases to TRAI for reconsideration.

The defaulter companies include those who were given licences tweaking the rules and who are now facing the CBI probe. The committee is understood to have noted in its report that the telecom firms that faulted in rolling out the services should have been dealt with sternly.

Clugston Construction wins contract to build £8M waste treatment plant

Artist’s impression of the recycling facility.
Clugston Construction, one of the North’s leading privately owned building and civil engineering contractors, with offices in Leeds and Scunthorpe, is pleased to announce it has won a £8M contract to build a waste treatment and recycling facility in North Lincolnshire.

The plant which is part of a £250M North Lincolnshire Council contract, will involve building a mechanical biological treatment plant on a ten acre site at the Normanby Enterprise Park in Flixborough. At the height of the project Clugston anticipate a workforce of approximately 40 people.

The landmark project, which will reduce the amount of waste North Lincolnshire sends to landfill by as much as 87 per cent, avoiding 11,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide being produced, will see Clugston Construction working along side its partner Waste Recycling Group (WRG), part of the FCC Group.

Once built the plant will be operational 7 days a week, handling 69,000 tonnes of rubbish per year and will process residual waste, turning it into Climafuel, an alternative fuel originally developed by CEMEX for use at its kilns at South Ferriby, Lincolnshire. Climafuel has been used successfully at the South Ferriby site as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels for almost five years.

Steve Radcliffe, managing director Clugston Construction said,
“We are delighted to be part of the successful team as Design and Build Contractor for the facility in North Lincolnshire. We have worked closely with our partners WRG and North Lincolnshire County Council for some time, to deliver what will be a sustainable waste management solution.”
The company continues to build on its already strong track record in the Waste and Energy sectors having also recently been awarded a £40M contract to build an Energy from Waste (EfW) facility for neighbouring Lincolnshire County Council. The work represents a further milestone in the company’s involvement with projects delivering a sustainable environment for the UK.

John Plant, Director of FCC Projects, commented,
“We are delighted to have been selected as the Council’s preferred bidder and look forward to working in partnership with the Council and Clugston Construction in delivering a sustainable and value for money solution. Reducing reliance on landfill means we can recover valuable secondary resources, and also reduce methane emissions – a powerful greenhouse gas.”

A North Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said,
“Diverting waste from landfill is one of our key aims and it will save money. We are delighted to have reached this crucial phase in the procurement.”

CEMEX’s technical director Neville Roberts said,
“We have been steadily increasing the use of Climafuel at our south Ferriby plant and to be able to source more of it locally is a win-win situation. Securing this contract to deal with North Lincolnshire’s waste represents a local solution to a local problem”

Washington County Tourism: There's an App for that

The Washington County Tourism Agency (WCTPA) has launched a free app for smartphone users that includes three megabytes of information regarding sites, attractions, hotels, restaurants, festivals and more.

Agency Executive Director J.R. Shaw says that this app kicks off their mobile marketing campaign.

"More and more people are getting their information and are researching their travel destinations online and electronically," he says. He also adds that 25% of cell phone users have smartphones.

Shaw explains that they have "tailored" their visitwashingtonpa.com website to be accessible from a smartphone. Users can download the Washington County Tourism app from that website or iTunes, and it will offer tourist destination suggestions in Washington County. The app includes a "What's Nearby" feature, which operates via GPS to determine the sites the smartphone user is closest to. The app is available for the Android, Blackberry, and iPhone.

Shaw believes the app is the first of its kind in the region, if not the state, and that he hopes other regions catch on because future generations will all have smartphones.

"[The younger generation] demographic is much more savvy on the smartphones and they might not be the target market for travel right now, but they soon will be. We know that our future customers are going to be using smartphones," Shaw said.

The county's heritage sites include Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, Duncan and Miller Glass Museum, the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum and 22 covered bridges.

CMU to Unveil Converted Honda Civic

This week Carnegie Mellon University Researchers will unveil a 2002 Honda Civic that has been converted from gas to all-electric. The Civic is the prototype for the university’s ChargeCar Electric Vehicle Conversion Project. The Civic's powertrain has been replaced with a 35-horsepower electric motor and 33 lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. It's estimated to be able to travel more than 40 miles at a peak speed of 70 miles per hour. Ben Brown, a Project Scientist with the Robotics Institute, says the car travels a sufficient distance for most drivers. "The Department of Transportation statistics suggest that somewhere around a 40 mile range is quite adequate." An open house showcasing the car takes place March 25 at 3p.m. in the Electric Garage located at 4621 Forbes Avenue in Oakland. At the unveiling, researchers will be taking names of those who want their car to be converted. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take a ride in an electric car. "One of the goals of this project is actually to get some vehicles out into the public and into the hands of the public in the Pittsburgh area to send a message that electric vehicles really are here and are practical," Brown says. Researchers are working with local mechanics and garages to expand use of the technology, and researchers will be available at the event for questions regarding issues and expenses involved with the conversion process.

Life Sciences Greenhouse Gets New Home

The Southside is now home to the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse. The 10-year old organization left it’s building on Second Avenue for a new “campus” at the River Park Commons Business Center. Greenhouse CEO John Manzetti says right now they are providing space for about a dozen incubator companies.

Manzetti says the lease in the old build was coming up for renewal and they looked at all areas of the region before landing on the south side. He says he wanted to be near the universities, near the companies working in the life sciences field and still have reasonable rental rates.

The new building will not only hold the greenhouse’s administrative offices and its clients, it will also be home to two venture capital firms and a pair of bio science companies. “To allow them to see what is going on in our greenhouse portfolio and actually see some companies up close and personal for the purposes of partnering with them, investing money in the case of a venture capital firm, or maybe investing in technology they think is important for their growth,” says Manzetti.

Manzetti says another advantage of the new location is the ability to expand. He says they have more space in the buildings that they are currently occupying and have access to other buildings in the area.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Pittsburgh’s regional foundation community, founded PLSG as a public/private partnership in 2001. It provides startup capital, building space, and access to qualified personnel and connections to other companies to emerging technologies.

"Watson" Goes for Win

The language-computing computer Watson will attempt to hold on to its lead tonight in the final episode of a three-part Jeopardy! series pitting the computer versus two of the shows greatest champions, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter.

Carnegie Mellon University professor Eric Nyberg is a contributor in the creation of Watson, and says he will watch with excitement, though he already knows the result.

Nyberg along with CMU students Nico Schlaefer and Hideki Shima work with IBM on the development of the computer which has earnings of $35,734 after 2 rounds of Jeopardy compared to $10,400 for Rutter and $4,800 for Jennings. The 3 episodes were filmed last month, so Nyberg and other contributors to the computer’s creation know the results. Nyberg was surprised by Watson’s success on the second day.

“I think my expectation was really that it would be like what you saw on day one where it was sort of a neck and neck kind of thing where Watson did very well in some categories and didn’t really answer anything in some of the other categories,” Nyberg says. “That’s actually quite characteristic of Watson’s performance overall.”

The language computing computer processes the clues using a vast knowledge of the English language, programmed by people like Nyberg. Watson then calculates a confidence level for the answers it’s considering and buzzes in if it seems sure.

Nyberg says the research has been great for the field of language computing technology and he says CMU has already implemented improvements to the model idea.

“One of the things we’re working on at Carnegie Mellon is a technique that basically helps Watson to study for a particular topic,” Nyberg says. “You can give Watson documents that are on topics that you want him to learn about and then we have another tech that will go out and find other relevant texts that are available.”

However if Nyberg wants viewers to know anything, he jokes that Watson’s intelligence is nothing to fear.

“It’s not going to take over the world, it’s not dangerous and nobody’s going to give any launch codes to Watson when it thinks that grasshoppers eat kosher and Toronto is a U.S. city.”

Facebook is ‘A Second Internet’

Facebook is challenging Google’s supremacy on the Internet with a radically different approach to how people live, work, play and search online.

While Google delivers search results selected by algorithms that take into account a user’s Web history, Facebook boasts a richer level of personalization based on one’s own “likes” and the recommendations of Facebook friends.

Mark Zuckerberg, who founded Facebook in his Harvard University dorm room six years ago and is now worth an estimated 6.9 billion dollars, refers to it as the “social graph.”

“I think what we’ve found is that when you can use products with your friends and your family and the people you care about they tend to be more engaging,” Zuckerberg said in an interview with the CBS show “60 Minutes.”

“The social graph is incredibly broad,” said Wedbush Securities social media analyst Lou Kerner, picking up on Zuckerberg’s favorite phrase. “It includes not only what you do and what you like but people you know and what they like and the companies you interact with.”

For some Internet watchers like Kerner, Facebook is constructing a parallel network built around the interactions of its more than 500 million members.

“I refer to Facebook as the second Internet, maybe more valuable than the first because we’re all interconnected on it,” Kerner told .

“Social media is an increasingly important part of how you reach people and it’s a growing part of every marketer’s budget,” he said.

Pittsburgh Moves Forward in Entertainment Tech Field

The Next Three Days, Unstoppable, and Love and Other Drugs were just some of 2010’s box office hits filmed in the Pittsburgh region, which is growing in the entertainment field. Inspired by that growth and interest in the entertainment field, the Pittsburgh Entertainment Technology (PET) Project is to launch January 27.

PET’s goal is to bring together all of the region’s entertainment technology companies under one banner.

“We’re going to hope to get all of the entertainment companies together, and all of the people interested in entertainment technology, film, and all the innovative things we’re trying to do together, in one room,” Organizer Kim Chestney Harvey said of the launch, which will be hosted at the Entertainment Technology Center by Don Marinelli.

Chestney Harvey says along with bringing all these people together as part of one group, creating a database for filmmakers who come to the region is another objective of the PET.

“We will put the contents of this database into a nationwide directory for the filmmakers to use and access,” Chestney Harvey says. “When they come here regionally to work they can look and see what assets they have here to choose from.”

The PET is a project put together by four groups including the Pittsburgh Technology Council, the Idea Foundry, the Pittsburgh Film Office, and Carnegie Mellon’s Entertainment Technology Center. Some of the technologies that the region’s companies have produced for filmmakers include music compostion, 3-D computer graphics and visual effects, and branded gaming among other things.

“We realize that we have a really robust culture and a lot of really interesting things happening here and we kind of wanted to show our support for that and come up with some way to support what all of our local companies are doing,” Chestney Harvey says.

Sony To Beat Samsung in India

Sony Corp., struggling to restore its profit television, may delegate to Samsung Electronics Co., this year's best-selling flat-screen TVs in India, the fastest growing major market researcher DisplaySearch said.

In the transition from the previous strategy, which focuses on India's richest shopping bags, Sony has increased its market share by offering cheaper models and expand its distribution network

Hisakazu Torii, a Tokyo-based analyst at DisplaySearch says in an interview. Bravia TV producer last year, it ranks third behind India, Samsung and LG Electronics Inc., said.

"We are finally starting to see the fruits of Sony's efforts to strengthen its brand and its sales network," said Torii. "There is a real possibility that they can take the upper hand for the year."

Sony drive in India is part of a larger movement of Japanese companies including Toshiba Corp., after rival South Korea, the expansion of emerging markets. However, a low-power version in the United States and Europe, the traditional strongholds of Sony CEO Howard Stringer may prevent end a run of six years to lose the business of television.

Yorkshire company powers up to meet global demand

Yorkshire based company EMSc (UK) Limited is pleased to announce it has signed exclusive agreements with companies in Australia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to market and install its Powerstar voltage optimisation solution.

In Australia the company has set up a joint venture with Perth based Cockburn Electrical and in the UAE it has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Wildcatos Oil services. The company carried out in-depth demographic and market research to identify countries in which to market Powerstar.
Like the UK, there is a growing demand in both Australia and the UAE not only for a ‘greener’ approach towards energy consumption, to overcome concerns about the impact on the environment, but also from businesses that are looking to find ways of reducing their costs through a more efficient use of the power they have to buy from energy providers.
In line with the success the company has been experiencing in the UK, it has also seen sales for Powerstar grow in markets across Europe. To meet demand in Cyprus, for example, the company has had to employ a new business development manager.

To further highlight the growing international interest in Powerstar Dr. Alex Mardapittas, designer and managing director of EMSc, recently appeared on national television in South Africa, on CNBC’s Powerlunch, to talk about Powerstar. He was also invited to be a guest speaker at the South African Energy Efficiency Convention.

Dr. Mardapittas commented;
“As international interest in Powerstar increases, we will continue to identify and implement the most appropriate distribution strategy for each market. In Australia and the UAE our partners have long established businesses and know their respective markets very well.”

Powerstar is the most efficient voltage optimisation system in the world and can save up to 26.1% of total electricity consumption and related CO² emissions, all without compromising the supply to electrical equipment. The payback period is typically between 0.8 and 2.5 years.

Powerstar provides an instant solution to businesses and organisations, enabling them to save money by reducing energy consumption, at the same time cutting carbon emissions.

Powerstar:

Can save up to 26.1% of electricity consumption.

Is fully designed and manufactured in the UK. All Powerstar components, including even minor items such as the paint, are sourced from UK manufacturers. The Powerstar design and any associated software are designed by EMSc UK Limited.

Comes with guaranteed savings.

Will improve the life expectancy of electrical equipment.

Will improve the power quality (reduce harmonics and improve the power factor).

Has the highest efficiency and provides better savings than any other voltage optimisation system sold in the UK. This has been proven in independent tests (on the same load and same voltage reduction), head to head with similar competitive systems.

  • Significantly higher energy savings (up to 13% more)
  • Reduced harmonics by 88% more than competitive systems
  • Running significantly cooler than competitive systems. (While Powerstar operated at normal ambient temperatures, competitive systems were operating at nearly 70°C).

The EMS team has over 150 years combined experience in designing and manufacturing special transformers and the Powerstar design is a direct result of this experience.
