Nick Wittmer Aims to Continue His Winning Streak at Toronto’s Grand Prix

Montreal (Quebec), July 13 2010.- Winners at the Grand Prix of Mirabel earlier this month, the Lombardi Honda Racing Team heads to the Honda Indy Toronto Grand Prix and the mid-way point of the Canadian Touring Car Championship with confidence. At the wheel of the Montréal-based team’s Honda Civic Si, defending champion Nick Wittmer and his teammate Benjamin Distaulo will once again attempt to demonstrate the team’s supremacy.

Taking place as part of the popular Honda Indy Toronto Grand Prix, this weekend’s double-header marks the mid-way point of the series’ 2010 calendar. Nick Wittmer, the defending champion, has won three of the last four rounds in his Civic Si and anticipates the upcoming circuit on the streets of Toronto with impatience : Our Honda Civic Si is very competitive regardless of the track type and its handling is a definite advantage on one like Toronto’s he explains. Since the start of the season, Nick Wittmer has shown that he is very capable of managing all of his races, as proven with his victories on the fast Mosport track and the technical ICAR de Mirabel track just under two weeks ago.

In addition to the two Canadian Touring Car races with the Lombardi Honda Racing Team, Nick Wittmer has also been invited by the American RealTime Racing team to compete in the World Challenge (Touring Class), which will precede the first Canadian Touring Car race on Saturday afternoon. It will give me a lot of time on the track but I’m not complaining. And I’ll be driving Honda Civics for all my races ! adds the Montréal champion.

At the wheel of his number 6 Honda Civic Si, Ville Lorraine driver Benjamin Distaulo needs to familiarize himself with the Toronto layout. I’m going into this a little green in terms of knowing the track but seeing as my team’s been here before, I’m not too worried. My Honda Civic Si is really competitive regardless of the type of track indicates Benjamin. He adds : my goal is to help my teammate Nick in his championship bid and to earn as many team points as possible.

The Lombardi Honda Racing Team will run two cars at this event, as explained by team owner Tony Lombardi : we want to concentrate on Nick and Benjamin’s results for this Grand Prix. After the Honda Indy Toronto, we’ll have a one-month break in the season after which we will be in a better place to bring back a third car with a new driver for the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières he explains. As for the upcoming double header in Toronto, the team owner’s ambitions remain unchanged: Nick is leading the championship and the goal is to do everything possible for him to continue his winning streak. We hope to leave Toronto having increased his championship lead even more. As for Benjamin, he needs to learn the circuit but I feel confident for him. He had some bad luck in Mirabel but that’s behind us now and I don’t forget the fact that he’s delivered some remarkable performances since the beginning of the season. He’s currently in eighth place but I’m convinced he’ll move up some spots before the season’s over concludes Tony Lombardi.

The 2010 edition of the Honda Indy Toronto’s two Canadian Touring Car Championship rounds are scheduled for Saturday afternoon (5:40 pm start) and Sunday morning (9:20 am). The IndyCar, Indy Lights, Trans-Am and World Challenge series are also on the itinerary for this, one of the most important annual events in Canadian motorsports.

Lombardi Honda Racing will contest all rounds of the 2010 Canadian Touring Car Championship, which included two visits to Mosport to kick off the season before the Grand Prix in Mirabel, Toronto, and Trois -Rivières. The season ends with a third trip to Mosport at the end of August and a second visit to Mirabel in mid-September.
