Laughy Wins Again

There was something in the air at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway Saturday night. After running almost the entire night last week caution free, the only race Saturday that was caution free was the 40 lap Cooper Tire thunder stock Race for a Cure feature. In the Legends, 29 cars were out for afternoon practice. One car blew his engine right at the end of practice. There was a mad scramble as drivers traded cars, leaving 28 Legends cars to hit the track in the 7th race of the Mac's Cup Chase.

Timing in at a new Legends cars track record time of 16.288 seconds put Ira Laughy on the pole for the night. Laughy shaved .008 seconds off his previous record, though he was running about .15 seconds faster in practice.

Hugh Williamson in the Pro division timed in second fastest at 16.364 seconds, while 15 year old young lion Dexter Hucal qualified third fastest at 16.455 seconds. Top qualifier in the semi-pro division was Mike Czaja in seventh at 16.587 seconds.

From qualifying, the cars are split into odd/even heats, where they run against each other in two 12 lap heat races. Adam Gilbert (#32) took the win in the first heat, leaving Ira Laughy (#17) in second and Dexter Hucal (#81) in third. In the second heat race, the even cars from qualifying, Kyle Stevens (#38) picked up the win, with Dave McKean (#15) second and Hugh Williamson (#42) third.

In the third heat, the odd finishers from qualifying, Dexter Hucal and Adam Gilbert swapped places, with Hucal taking the win and Gilbert in third. Ira Laughy was in between in second. And in the fourth heat, Hugh Williamson took that win, with Kyle Stevens in second and Mike Kipp (#22K) rounding out the top three.

The top 18 cars from qualifying automatically make it to the main feature race, while the remaining ten having to run a B Main, with the top six transferring to the main feature.

Jason Jessiman (#77), Mathew Priest (#28), James Bergdahl (#007), Jordyn Fancy (#18), Chelsey Wilson (#09) and Lowell McLaren (#27) made the transfer list into the Dent Clinic 50. After the traditional Legends four wide salute, the 50 lap Dent Clinic feature was under way. Ira Laughy jumped into the lead and never relinquished, though he knew Kyle Stevens or Dexter Hucal was on his tail all night. Bob Rattai and Hugh Williamson bowed out early (laps 11 and 13) because of problems with their cars, but the other 22 hung on to the end.

Ira Laughy has long been considered untouchable in the Legends cars, but Saskatoon has been indifferent to that reputation. The track is different here with multiple racing grooves. Four, five and even six wide racing is not unheard of with the size of the Legends cars. Aaron Friend upset Laughy here in June for the win and Hucal remembers that. Friend wasn't here tonight.

Hucal challenged Laughy on every restart. He challenged in traffic and he challenged where cars shouldn't be, earning himself a couple of warnings for driving on the grass and yellow curb to pass. In the end it was Ira Laughy taking the checkered flag more than a second ahead of Dexter Hucul. Kyle Stevens hung on for third, with Adam Gilbert fourth and Saskatoon's Brad Blumer rounding out the top five.

All For A Cause

15 thunder stocks hit the track Saturday night for some old fashioned thunder style racing. The cars came together for the second annual Race for A Cure, a fundraiser for cancer research. At last count over $6,500 had been raised with donations still coming in. Mike Rea opened the night with a win in the heat race, with Mickey Pagoda and Barry Stefaniuk following. Barry Stefaniuk picked it up, taking the win in the qualifier, followed by Mike Rea and Kevin MacLaggin.

The caution free 40 lap Cooper Tire feature race saw Mickey Pagoda beat her way to the front, leaving Barry Stefaniuk in second and Mike Rea in third.

Fans were treated to some old fashioned style thunder stock racing as cars made it no secret they were out there to win. Flagman Rick Elliot kept the yellow flag in his pocket even as cars were left facing traffic on the front straight, watching as cars slipped by on their left and right at over 70 miles per hour.

Even Elliot showed he still has some tricks up his sleeve as on one restart in the qualifier, encouraged by a cheering crowd he went straight to green without the traditional one lap warning. Some cars were obviously caught sleeping, but veterans Barry Stefaniuk and Mickey Pagoda caught the flag right away and charged to the front. The SSCRA thanks Nitin Madiratta for all the work he puts into making the Race For A Cure such a success, the extra cars and of course the fans for their support.

Jalbert Continues to Dominate Mini Stocks

Domination by Todd Jalbert continued Saturday night in the Parts Source mini stocks, as Jalbert won the heat and the feature. Even past champion Brennen Forseille couldn't get his car matching the lap times turned by Jalbert. With Jalbert taking the heat race, Kenny Heintz crossed for second and Frank Vangool picked up third. Jason Wilke was doing double duty, driving both his Legends car and Darnell Schick's mini stock, took fourth in the heat.

Starting from the back in the qualifier, Jalbert worked his way up to a third place finish, bested by rookie David "hood pin" Krushelniski in second and Brennen Forseille taking the win. Jalbert was back on top for the Parts Source mini stock feature, with Brennen Forseille in second and Kenny Heintz in third. Frank Vangool and Scott Barrand rounded out the top five.

Looking at average lap times for the 25 lap feature, Jalbert was on top with an average time of 17.839 seconds. Past champion Brennen Forseille managed an average lap time of 17.884 seconds, about 5/100's slower.

Kenny Heintz, who is probably considered the top contender in the division had an average time of 17.929, almost 1/10 of a second slower, while veteran Frank Vangool could manage only 4/10's slower than Jalbert at 18.248. Jason Wilke in Darnell Schick's car was 3/10's slower at 18.165 second average.

Pro Truck Season Winding Down. Ross Hard to Catch

Race fans have been left wondering what's going on with the SKL Trailer pro trucks, specifically Wade Wohlford. For the third week in a row trucks have been wrecked, with one of Wohlford's trucks being one of those for the second week in a row.

In lap 10 of the SKL Trailer feature, Wohlford got loose coming through three and four. The slippage continued down the front and he came together with Deb Newnham around the start line. That contact turned Wohlford and he went hard into the front wall, destroying the front of his truck for the second week in a row. Last week both Wohlford's trucks crashed, damaging the front end of one and the back of the other.

He was driving his spare truck Saturday, the one that had the front end damage last week. Following the crash Wohlford was issued a technical disqualification for the feature because his truck had antifreeze in it and lacked tow straps.

Ken Ross went on to win the SKL Trailer feature, with Tony Mikulcik picking up second and Rick Kucher taking third. Scott Lucas was fourth and Scott Williams was fifth, though later disqualified for failing to report to tech.

Earlier, Tony Mikulcik took the pro truck heat race, followed by Ken Ross and Rick Kucher. Scott Williams took the qualifier race, with Scott Lucas second and Ken Ross third. Alex Leschenko has basically closed the door on any hopes of a championship has he found himself without a truck this week. He had his Dodge Ram back together this week, but the engine was losing oil pressure during pre-race practice, parking him for the night. Alex drops to third in points, 99 behind Ken Ross. It's now up to Scott Lucas to catch Ross, but even his 25 point difference will be difficult without Ross hitting a trouble spot. A perfect race night is 80 points in the trucks and they have only two scheduled race meets left.
