BOWMANVILLE, ON, Sunday Aug. 22, 2010: Scott Steckly driver of the No. 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge qualified in second and was making a late race pass for second when he had mechanical problems and finished the Dickies 200 in seventeenth.
After practicing fifth quickest early in the day the team decided to make a few changes to the Canadian Tire Dodge before qualifying.
In qualifying, Steckly posted a time quick enough for the second starting position. Steckly toured the half mile oval in a time of 21.888 with an average speed of 82.237.
At the drop of the green flag Steckly settled into third place. After a caution Steckly was able to take over the second position but soon after another caution occurred and restarting IMG_4977.JPGon the outside proved to be difficult all night and the No. 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge slipped to fourth.
Steckly would run in the top six for the first half of the race. When the fourth caution flag flew Steckly headed to pit road for service. His team would put on right side tires and he returned to the track to line up for the restart in twelfth. With the fresh tires Steckly was able to move his way up through the pack and by lap 130 the Canadian Tire Dodge had taken over the third position.
Steckly was attempting to make a pass to take over second place when he ended up in the grass in turn one. Steckly didn’t have too much cosmetic damage, but the No. 22 team soon learned that they had mechanical problems.
Steckly lost just over 20 laps in the pits trying to fix the car before he got back out on the track. At the drop of the checkered flag Steckly was scored in seventeenth position.
After the race Steckly commented, “The car was fast and we were heading to the front but we got turned around late in the race and broke the upper link in the rear end. A disappointing way to finish the event as we were looking forward to a podium for our Canadian Tire team.”
Finish 1. Don Thompson Jr. 2. JR Fitzpatrick 3. Kerry Micks 17. Scott Steckly
Scott Steckly falls one position to fourth in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series point standings after eight events.
The Dickies 200 will be broadcast on TSN on Saturday August 28th, at Noon EST.
Next up for the 22 Racing Team will be the NAPA Autopro 100 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec on August 29th. Steckly had a scary finish in this event last year when last lap contact between several cars caused his Canadian Tire ride to do a slow roll over landing on it’s roof. He walked away with no injuries but the team looks forward to a better finish this year.
