The Joyceville Jet Sets the Track on Fire
The heat of the summer was equally matched by the action on the dirt oval Saturday night at Brighton Speedway when Rapid Rad and Star 93.3 presented an amazing program. With a packed house and full complement of stock cars, fans and drivers alike were blown away with a full night of racing.
The five divisions of racing that began at 7 pm were led off with the Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks. With a field of twenty three the Big Smooth #72 Doug Anderson battled to the front to sweep the pack and take home his seventh feature finish in the 2010 season with #91 Kraig Handley in second and #45 Mike Schonauer in third.
The Bainer’s Radiators Canadian Modified division was full of excitement and lead changes. #4 Shawn Gregory, #19 Zeke McKeown and #11 Dan Ferguson kept the fans on the edge of their seats during their 25 lap feature. Gregory lead most of the event swapping the lead with McKeown early on until late in the race when Ferguson was able to go up around Gregory on the high side to return to Victory Lane. McKeown ended up second with Gregory close behind just narrowly edging out Nathan Bosma’s 09 which had his best run of the season.
The big excitement of the night came from the Southern Ontario Sprint feature when local hero #42 The Joyceville Jet Rick Wilson took to the lead and just about the lapped the field of big winged racers. Wilson started in sixth spot and had the lead by the end of turn one. There was no turning back as Wilson ran the extreme high side of the track finding grip where the other struggled. #71 Travis Cunningham ran a strong race holding off #84 Tyler Rand for second while #11 Chris Jones came across the line forth.
Vanderlaan’s Building Supplies Late Model feature saw the #57 of Charlie Sandercock start in the pole position after mechanical failures last week and used his starting position to his advantage. Sandercock took the lead but didn’t go unchallenged as #29 Phil Potts using the same line as Rick Wilson came from deep in the field to overtake Sandercock on the high side. A lap 12 restart saw Potts choose the high line for the restart while Sandercock restarted on the inside. This time Sanderock was able to make it work as the two ran side by side for four laps before Sandercock finally pulled ahead and went on to take win. #87 Andrew Hennessy rounded out the top three.
Intermission action with the Larry’s Towing Spectator One On One racing was nerve racking as Paul Read in a Suburban and Brett Minaker in a Grand Prix thrilled the fans with their daring and ability. Read succeeded at the end of the second lap to barely staying ahead of Minaker at the start finish line.
The final feature of the night to thrill the dirt track fan was the Bill’s John Comp 4 Division. #32 Terry Hough succeeded in holding off #12 Kyle Sopaz and the two battled side by side for nearly the complete 15 lap feature winning by a fender. #84 Derrick Greig continued his consistent runs with a top three after the #04 of Josh Reid and the #90 of Cory White were disqualified in post race inspection. Hough’s feature and heat win netted him the Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week honours and he will join fans in the courtyard early on August 14 signing autographs and showing off his winning car.
Racing action sponsored by Behan Construction will cost only $5 as track presents Price Slasher Saturday featuring Fan Appreciation, the Halloween edition, the Pro Stock Duel in the Dirt race, Comp 4, Stingers, Motorsports of Trenton Flat Track 4 Wheelers and the Gord’s Water Vantastics. Racing begins at 7:00 pm and gates will be open at 5:30 pm.
