Based on the memoirs of Polish Army officer and Soviet prisoner of war Sławomir Rawicz, The Way Back centres on a group of Allied soldiers who escape from a Russian Gulag and befriend an orphaned Polish girl as they trek over 4000 miles across the Gobi desert, Tibet and the Himalayas en route to India.
The Way Back will look to stake its claim for one of the ten Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards and may give the Australian director his fifth nomination in the Best Director category. Could this be Weir's year after being pipped at the post for Witness, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World? Watch the trailer now and see for yourself when it receives a limited theatrical run in North America from December 3rd ahead of a wide release on January 21st, 2011...
