Recent news coming out of Hollywood suggests that screen legend Robert Redford could be bringing his Sundance Film Festival to London's O2 early next year, giving the British film industry a boost in the wake of the coalition government's recent announcement that the UK Film Council is to be abolished.
Speaking from Cannes, Redford confirmed that he had held talks with the venue and was looking to focus on independent British films and documentaries. The Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker becomes the latest Hollywood star to lend his support to the industry after heavyweights such as Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood spoke out to criticize the government's plans.
Sundance is of course one of the most prestigious festivals in the industry and a major proponent of independent cinema, having been responsible for launching the careers of the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson, Robert Rodriguez, Kevin Smith, Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino. It will certainly become a welcome addition to the British film calendar, so let's just hope there's enough films to fill the schedule should Redford's plans come to fruition.
