Michael Mann Retrospective - Collateral (2004)

Collateral, 2004.

Directed by Michael Mann.
Starring Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Mark Ruffalo, Jada Pinkett Smith, Javier Bardem, Bruce McGill, Irma P. Hall, Peter Berg and Jason Statham.

Collateral
SYNOPSIS:

A Los Angeles cab driver unwittingly becomes the chauffer for a hired assassin.

Collateral
To improve upon the depth and detail of the nighttime images for his 2004 thriller Collateral, director Michael Mann shot the exterior footage with high definition digital cameras giving the movie a gritty documentary feel. Initially it was jarring to see the usually glamorous Tom Cruise playing the grey-haired assassin Vincent; however, the shock quickly disappears as he effortlessly dissolves into his psychotically-charming character. The pivotal role is given to Jamie Foxx who plays the unfortunate cabbie, Max. The transformation from being the victim to the victor is so believable that the performance provided Foxx with one of his two Oscar nominations that year.

The Chicago filmmaker impressed Tom Cruise with his vision for the motion picture. “When Michael sent the script he sent different stills,” explained the box office megastar, “almost an art motif of things he was thinking about, and what he wanted to explore. It was just something else because his vision of L.A. and what he sees has real emotion, has real poetry. I knew it was going to be a lot of fun and it was.”

In regards to the nondescript attire Cruise wears doing the course of the film, Mann stated: “It's not really a disguise, but it's anonymous. If somebody actually witnesses him and police ask for a description, what are people going to say? A middle-aged, middle-height guy wearing a middle grey suit and white shirt. It describes anybody and nobody.”

When it came to portraying Vincent convincingly, Cruise stated, “It was kind of an anti-social character. It was months of talking with Michael and finding that point of fracture. Where does it all go wrong for Vincent and where does it start? You know. We just kept creating layers. Normally, I always do a lot of research for a character, particularly something like this. That back story has to inform every scene. With Michael, he had pictures of where I came from. We discussed a lot of different aspects of where I live and how I became the way I became as Vincent. So it will emotionally inform the movie and start to look at where does this fracture happen. Vincent is impinging on Max. I'm driving that car from the back seat and then bring my attention to the things I have to do to get my job done. When you're making a movie, it's not like oh, it's going to happen here. It evolves out of this creative process, which Michael is excellent at.”

Michael Mann was drawn to the script written by Stuart Beattie because the story unfolds during such a short time frame. As for the original New York City setting being replaced by the City of Angels, the director remarked, “The idea of shooting an intense film like this in L.A. at night precedes the Collateral screenplay. It's something I wanted to do after the last two films that I made that were both historically accurate - extraordinarily real subjects and characters. So I had an appetite for doing a film like this before I got the Collateral script.”

The majority of the film takes place in a taxi cab with occasional flashes of gunfire. “We don't see it as an action film,” said Mann. “We see it as a drama. It's as extreme as it can be. In this one night, where these guys have been, whatever their expectations and dreams are for the future, everything is going to change. They are not going to be the same people after tonight. That's an idea, that's a dramatic idea. Then we worked very hard to build the characters and make them as real and three-dimensional as possible, just the way you are in your own lives, with as much specificity as we could build in. Then we do the dramatic scenario and that's really it.”

With the taxi having such a key role in the movie, Mann revealed, “We built 17 cabs. Some had no fronts, some had no sides. Some we didn't use at all. What actually worked out was that sequence where they're supposed to be in a real cab with someone, either myself or Gary Jay, with the camera on his shoulder, was in one of the seats. But the interesting thing about a cab is that you have to view it as an opportunity because if you have two people, they're both facing the camera, but whenever we elect to, the man in the backseat can have his own thoughts coming across his face because the other guy is not necessarily seeing him.”

The H.D. technology has found a convert in the veteran moviemaker. “For this movie, it was great shooting in digital.” However, there were complications that needed to be worked out. Mann stated, “It required a lot. It was like having a camera that's attached on an umbilical to your refrigerator at home. So it wasn't portable. But it enabled me to be very painterly with building the scene. It's counterintuitive to photograph in every conceivable way. Throw a light meter away, you don't need it. It's right there on a high def monitor. But it requires knowing exactly what you want because what's available is a much broader spectrum than a motion picture film.”

Tom Cruise had nothing but praise for his director: “It was exciting. And I could feel it. And as an actor, I love movies. I have seen all of Mann's movies. It's something you want to look at and study because he designs his pictures from the ground up and he really has a tremendous command of the medium and the storytelling.”

DVD Review - Seconds Apart (2011)

Seconds Apart, 2011.

Directed by Antonio Negret.
Starring Orlando Jones, Edmund Entin and Gary Entin.

SYNOPSIS:

Damned from the moments of their births, two brothers possess a gruesome talent for telekinesis - a power they use in the most horrific ways imaginable.

If cinema history has taught us anything, it’s that twins are scary as hell and not to be trusted. Case in point is Seconds Apart, a chiller/thriller from Colombian director Antonio Negret and first-time feature writer George Richards.

The twins in question are played by real life twins Gary and Edmund Entin who are quite simply excellent in their roles. They are genuinely creepy and feel like a cross between Ricky Fitts from American Beauty and the Grady Daughters from The Shining. While their dialogue feels fairly forced and clichéd, the Entin twins do a very good job of making the content fit the bill.

The Entins are supported by a relatively unknown cast including Samantha Droke in the “love interest” role and Morgana Shaw and Louis Herthum as the equally creepy parents of the films main characters. The only real “star” of the film per say is comedian Orlando Jones who plays Detective Lampkin. It feels particularly odd to watch Jones in such a serious role but he actually holds the screen quite well.

However, Lampkin is a major part of the biggest deterrent for the film. There is a horribly contrived sub plot about the detective’s dead wife that has been shoehorned in for no real reason. It’s terribly written, woefully put together and is a huge distraction from the main plot. Not only is it incredibly boring, but it almost ruins the flow of the movie.

When you’re watching a chiller/thriller, you will undoubtedly be waiting for the twist that will either make or break the movie. Luckily for Seconds Apart, the film’s twist falls into the former category. It’s very well written and incredibly creative. However, I would argue that the final moments of the film are not enough to satisfy an audience.

While Seconds Apart does have its moments, it is by no means a great film. The set pieces of the film are very well executed and Negret does create a great feeling of unease, but Richards’ script doesn’t hold enough water to carry it through the 86 minutes. Perhaps diehard fans of the genre will enjoy it for what it is, everyday movie viewers may find the piece to be hokey and ineffectual.

Jon Huntsman's Supporter

As I tweeted earlier today one Iowa Republican on the poll we will release tomorrow said they would vote for Jon Huntsman if the election was today- not 1% but one respondent, period.

Here are some facts about Huntsman's supporter:

-He is 'not sure' when it comes to Barack Obama's job performance- doesn't approve or disapprove. He reports having voted for Obama in 2008.

-Huntsman is the only potential Republican candidate he has a favorable opinion of. He expresses 'no opinion' about Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, Ron Paul, Rudy Giuliani, Chris Christie, Buddy Roemer, Rick Perry, Fred Karger, Paul Ryan, and Gary Johnson. He has an unfavorable opinion of Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, Tim Pawlenty, Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, and Donald Trump.

-When it comes to the general election he would vote for Romney over Obama, but he would vote for Obama if the GOP nominee was Palin or Cain. He's undecided about match ups between Obama and Gingrich or Pawlenty.

-He does not consider himself to be a member of the Tea Party, and thinks Obama was born in the United States. He describes himself as 'somewhat conservative,' is between the ages of 46 and 65 and lives in the northeastern part of the state.

I imagine that's everything you could care to know about the one Jon Huntsman supporter we found in Iowa.

Baseball and Softball: Five Loudoun Teams Advance in Regional Play

(May 31, 2011) - From AA to AAA Loudoun baseball and softball teams had a great Memorial Day as five teams advanced in regional tournament play. Stone Bridge baseball in the Northern Region and Loudoun Valley softball in the Northwest Region both advanced to the semifinals.

Freedom baseball and Broad Run and Woodgrove softball advanced to the quarterfinals. One of the two teams to fall was

(May 31, 2011) - When Dulles District athletic directors convinced Region II to expand its playoffs to account for the fact that Loudoun's 9-team district is almost twice as big as some of the other 5-team districts in the region, Monday night's success is surely what they had in mind as Dulles soccer teams went a perfect 6-0 in Region II first

Why Are Mets Promoting Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran for All-Star Game?

Just got an email from mets.com: REYES, BELTRAN NEED YOUR VOTES! Yeah, that's the way to cheer up a fan base - tell them to support players that may not even be in Met uniforms by the All-Star Game.

Maybe Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran would have more votes if their owner hadn't publicly criticized them last week.

Perhaps Fred Wilpon can make it up to Reyes by voting for him - just so long as he doesn't get Carl Crawford vote totals.

And Wilpon can vote for Beltran, but fill out multiple ballots with other outfielders so Beltran only gets 65-70% of his support.

The one thing we won't see from the Mets is truth in marketing:

Vote for Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran - increase their trade value!

Vote for Reyes and Beltran - it may be years before another Met has any hope of being voted onto the team!

Enjoy these Met All-Star performances while you can - starting in 2012, the Mets will only get someone on the team because every team has to have an All-Star. (But at least Justin Turner will be able to tell his grandkids he was an All-Star.)

I'd love to vote for Reyes - to sign a new contract with the Mets. As for Beltran, I vote for him to find a team that appreciates him.

In the end, many fans, including this one, will be voting with their wallets. And the exit polls on that score are looking pretty grim.

Perhaps the person most in favor of the Mets' latest dubious marketing ploy is incoming investor David Einhorn. ESPN's Adam Rubin suggests that Einhorn may be counting on the team to tank financially so that he can eventually take it over.

And a good way to make Met fans even angrier is to ask them to cast their All-Star votes for Reyes and Beltran - to think of them as the stars they are, just as ownership is no longer able or willing to pay for stars.

Burgess to Gov: Lease Pgh's Parking Garages

The idea to lease Pittsburgh’s parking assets in order to fund the city’s pension plan is still alive -- and now on its way to Harrisburg.

Councilman Ricky Burgess wrote a letter to Governor Tom Corbett, asking him to allow Pittsburgh’s state overseers (the Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority) to lease the city’s parking garages if Council does not do so by the end of the year.

The District 9 Councilman says under the parking lease plan, Pittsburgh’s pension plan could be fully funded in 17 years. Burgess was the only Council Member to support the lease plan proposed by Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.

Burgess also introduced legislation today that would set up an independent panel of actuaries and accountants to determine the balance of the pension fund.

That panel would also decide whether Council’s December 2010 infusion of parking tax revenue into the pension will save it from being taken over by the Pennsylvania Municipal Retirement System.

Burgess says Council won’t make the tough choices necessary to fix the city’s pension problem, so he’s asking Pittsburgh’s state overseers to make that choice instead.

BEEDE AND EVERSLEY PODIUM AT LIME ROCK PARK

(Lakeville, CT) -- After an unexpected but not unwelcome win in the last Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge event at Virginia International Raceway, Compass360 Racing (C360R) brought together one of their strongest line-ups of the season in the hopes of further podium results at Lime Rock Park.

As they had earlier in the year at Homestead, the team signed veteran Honda racer and multiple-time Grand-Am champion Bob Beede, this time to co-drive with Ryan Eversley in the #75 Children's Tumor Foundation Honda Civic Si. "After our win at VIR, we brought Bob in to try and help Ryan close the points gap to the leaders," explained Team Principal Karl Thomson. "Lime Rock is Beede's home track, and local knowledge can often make a big difference here."

Although still struggling with a series-mandated restrictor fitted to the Hondas at the beginning of this season, the team felt they could use smart strategic calls as they had in VIR to make up some of the performance deficits to the other front-runners. David Thilenius and Zach Lutz would once again share their #74 JC Concrete Honda, while John Kuitwaard (who also counts Lime Rock as his home track) would join Andrew Novich in the #77 Dr. Kimberly Henry / Speed Secrets Civic.

"I said before Virginia that we are out to win races," said Technical Director Ray Lee. "We're back in the championship hunt but after some tough races to start the year, we have to focus on wins and podiums."

Qualifying once again was proof positive that the Grand-Am restrictor is doing its job too well, with Beede the top team car qualifying 13th, Thilenius (who rarely qualified outside of the top ten last year) in 20th and Kuitwaard in 21st of the thirty-three Street Tuner entries. Interestingly, first to 32nd place were separated by just two seconds, demonstrating just how competitive the Continental Tire series is.

The race on Saturday was under beautiful clear sunny skies, and the 33-strong field of Street Tuner cars offered the huge spectator turn-out an awesome show as the opening act of the Lime Rock Memorial Day weekend. Despite their qualifying positions, all three starting drivers made solid gains and moved through the field, with all three C360R cars being in close proximity after lap ten, with the team running order being Thilenius, Beede and Kuitwaard.

The race progressed with a couple of yellow flag periods to tighten the field, the team's starting pilots turned over their cars to their co-drivers. Andrew Novich was in a solid fourth position, ahead of team-mates Zach Lutz and Ryan Eversley, albeit on slightly older tires and on an aggressive fuel strategy. There was a lot of action during the next hour and with fifteen minutes to go, Eversley was in fifth position, Lutz tenth and Novich in twelfth when an huge incident between the top two cars, moving all three of the C360R cars into the top ten.

With eight laps to go and the finish in sight, #77's fuel pump expired, and Novich carefully pulled the car to a safe location on track. "The crew made a great call to leave me out and hope for enough yellow flags to extend our fuel window," noted Novich. "It would have worked perfectly, and so it's really tough to finish this way when we were so close." He and Kuitwaard were scored 24th.

This left Eversley, now in third, and Lutz, in eighth, to bring home their cars with just a few laps to go, which they did with typical aplomb. "What an amazing finish," enthused Eversley. "You hate to benefit at the misfortune of others, and I'm glad Andrew (Carbonell) and Owen (Trinkler) are okay after that wreck. But two podiums in a row is great for the team, so we'll take it."

Similarly, Lutz was thrilled with the best result so far this season for the #74 of he and Thilenius. "It's nice to be back in the top ten," joked Lutz. "Hopefully we can have it become a regular thing for the rest of the year."

The team continued its rewarding partnership with the Children's Tumor Foundation, welcoming a dozen children suffering from Neurofibromatosis (NF), their families and top local fundraisers to Lime Rock Park. The kids were a part of the loud crowd during the race and the podium celebrations, cheering their heroes Ryan and Bob as they accepted their trophies. Fans are encouraged to donate at http://racing4research.org.

The team has a brief few days at its Toronto, Canada base before loading up the Hondas for the next event, at Watkins Glen, New York, on June 3rd, where the Continental Tire race will start at 6:00pm and race into the darkness.

CSO Alert Off for First Time in 2011

The Allegheny County Health Department has taken down the orange combined sewer overflow (CSO) flags for the first time this year. The county issues the warnings anytime raw sewage is flowing into the three rivers in Allegheny thanks to recent rainfall.

ACHD spokesperson Guillermo Cole says the county issues the alerts from May 16th through September. The warning flags went up on the first day and are just now being taken down. The alerts do not mean the river is closed, it just means recreational users should limit their contact with the water, “especially those with weakened immune systems,” says Cole.

Last year the county issued 9 alerts averaging 5 days each. Cole says it is not unusual to see a 15-day alert. In 2004 the average alert lasted 21 days. In 1999 the average alert was just 3 days. “It has to do with the amount of rain and when it comes,” says Cole.

Recreational boaters can look for the orange flags at marinas or they can get the information directly from the health department through its web site. A call to 412-687-ACHD will also get the information.

Govt all set to go ahead with its war against black money

Unfolding its determined war against black money, the government on Monday created an entirely new Directorate of Income Tax (Criminal Investigation) with its sub-offices in 8 cities under the Central Board of Direct Taxes to tackle the tax evasion and investments of illicit funds in various sectors.

A Finance Ministry notification setting up the new directorate known as DCI says it will handle criminal matters with financial implication punishable as an offence under the Income Tax and Wealth Tax Act. So far, this task was performed as one of its numerous responsibilities by the Income Tax Department.

Formation of a separate directorate is part of a 5-fold strategy adopted by the government to tackle the menace of illicit funds that are known loosely as black money. This strategy includes joining global crusade against black money, creating an appropriate legislative framework, setting up institutions for dealing with Illicit Funds, developing systems for implementation and imparting special skills to staff for effective action.

The new directorate is the third major step the government announced in three consecutive days, starting with creation of a high- powered panel headed by the CBDT chairman on Saturday to recommend within six months how to curb generation of black money and engaging three top class institutions to assess the real worth of the black money.

Window Graphic to Tout Regatta Events

A massive downtown window mural will promote the Three Rivers Regatta this year.

The windows of the Wyndham Grand Hotel will sport a 110-foot graphic of fireworks, powerboats, and the Regatta logo.

Regatta spokesman Michael Dongilli says the mural will also advertise “Circus Orange,” a first-time performance for the Fourth of July weekend event.

“They do performances in North America, but not at the Regatta before, and not in Pittsburgh,” says Dongilli. “So, this will be a never-before-seen show here in this particular area. It’s a one-hour performance that sort of caps all three days of the event, starting at around 8:45, so you can take full advantage of the pyrotechnic effects that they integrate into their performance.”

Dongilli says the graphic will complement a large banner hanging at the Portal Bridge in Point State Park.

Palmer Products of Monroeville will install the colorful window mural over the next three days.

The Changing Of The Guards (NASDAQ: RIMM) (NYSE: NOK)

Sixteen years... Sixteen years, better pick a new stock. While the good stockholder grieves today. Desperate men watch the king and the queen of swords. Fortune has called. The two companies are clutching to their long golden locks as their popularity drops behind the shadows of the market place. The palace of mirrors once reflected endless road of prosperity, but now there appears endless ruins.

Nokia shares are down nearly 17% today, as the company said it would significantly miss their own expectations. Research in Motion the blackberry maker recently dropped over 10% when they also cut their guidance. The difference was RIMM only guided down for a slight miss. Nokia continues to trade a premium to RIMM despite less profitability.

Nokia announced a move to Microsoft software in February. This move may have caused the company to badly miss expectations. Customers are less likely to buy the models of phones when they are expected to change.

The changing of the guards is taking place in the mobile area.

Mohawk International Raceway - THOMPSON SWEEPS WHILE RAABE, HOOGWERF, EVOY, BOUVIER AND WHITE ALL CLAIM MOHAWK CHECKERS

AKWESASNE, NY – May 31, 2011 - Heavy rains forced the May 20th feature events to be postponed at Mohawk International Raceway, then after mother nature decided to spoil the Memorial Day weekend festivities, MIR officials decided to fight back and throw all the racing on an absolutely beautiful Memorial Day Monday. With 7 features on the card lots of excitement was in store for the evening.

First up was the DIRTcar Pro Stock feature from May 20th. Ricky Thompson and Stephane Lebrun started on the front row with Thompson grabbing the early advantage and leading the opening 6 laps. It didn’t take long for veteran Jody Swamp to move from 7th to grab the top spot on lap 7. Only 2 caution flags slowed the 20 lap event which allowed Thompson regain the lead by lap 12 and held it the rest of the way over Swamp, Roch Aubin, Dave Bissonette and Dion Oakes.

In the Bandit division Derek Colbert and Bennett White made up the front row with Colbert taking the early lead. It didn’t take long for former Enduro division champion Owen White to make his presence known and grab the lead just past the halfway point of the 12 lap event. With the race going green to checkered Owen White opened up a big advantage on the field and grabbed the win over Colbert, Ernie Cree, Bennett White and Kyle Bouvier.

The DIRTCar Sportsman division concluded the May 20th portion of the program. Brad Winters and Dylan Evoy paced the field to the green flag with Winters taking the top spot. It didn’t take long for Evoy to wrestle the lead away from Winters on lap 3 bringing Dillon Sallows, Jenna David, Josh Jock and Tom Benedict along with him. Just then Winters slowed on the front stretch bringing out the yellow. A scary moment happened on lap 7 as Tom Benedict flipped in turn 4 after contact with the infield tire. Benedict was uninjured and was able to return to action later on in the evening. On the restart Evoy continued his strong run as Sheldon Hoogwerf started to move forward. By lap 13 Hoogwerf started to close on Evoy for the lead when Mike White slowed to a stop in turn 3. Evoy continued his dominance of the field until his left rear tire went flat on lap 17 sending him pit side. With Evoy out Sheldon Hoogwerf sailed to his 2nd career MIR DIRTCar Sportsman win over Dillon Sallows, Tom Conklin, Brad Winters and Kristian Smoke.

In the 2nd Bandit feature on Frenchie’s Chevrolet night Blaze Benedict and Stuart Mossow came to the green flag with Benedict grabbing the number 1 spot. Coming off turn 4 Benedict lost control of his machine, hitting the wall and rolling over just past the flag stand. Benedict was shaken up but able to walk away.  Kyle Bouvier had made his way to the lead by lap 6 and survived several challenges from Owen White and Derek Colbert along with a late race caution flag to score his first career feature win. White took 2nd, Colbert 3rd, Andy Fish and Corey Castell completed the top 5.

The DIRTCar 358 Modifieds took center stage for the 22nd running of the Memorial Cup and the first leg of the Frenchie’s Chevrolet American Revolution Series. 50 laps was the issue and 2009 track champion Roy Tarbell along with Perry Francis shared the front row with Francis taking command in the early going. It took 13 laps for the first caution to come out as Matt Billings who was running 3rd broke his front end in turn 2. On the restart Francis held onto the top spot with John Lazore who came from 10th up to 2nd Todd Stone, Tarbell and Chris Raabe who had charged from 17th starting position. On lap 15 Lazore grabbed the lead with Francis, Raabe, Stone and Tarbell making up the top 5. Caution came out on lap 16 as Casey Swamp slammed the turn 4 wall, he was uninjured. On lap 23 Todd Stewart broke a front end and hit the wall in turn 4 bringing out the yellow. With the race going caution free for the next 15 laps Lazore, Francis and Raabe put on an incredible show for the fans as they traded the top 3 positions numerous times and lapping several cars in the process. Tim O’Brien lost a motor on the front stretch on lap 39 bunching the field up for the next restart. Lazore still held the lead when some great heads up driving occurred on lap 43. Perry Francis made a run to the outside of Chris Raabe going down the back stretch when suddenly Francis ran out of race track and came within feet of hitting the end of the pit wall in turn 3, he would head behind the pit wall, come back to the track and amazingly remain on the lead lap. On lap 47 Raabe and Lazore were racing hard for the top spot. Coming off turn 4 the 2 drivers made contact forcing John Lazore into the wall and ending his evening. The 2008 358 Modified champion was not injured but the car was heavily damaged. On the final restart Raabe held off several challenges from veteran Todd Stone to take his 2nd straight win and first Memorial Cup title, Perry Francis, Roy Tarbell and Carey Terrance rounded out the top 5.

The 2nd DIRTcar Sportsman 20 lap event saw Dylan Evoy take the lead from outside pole sitter Tom Benedict. Sheldon Hoogwerf’s bid for his second win of the night was taken away in turn 2 as he was forced pit side with front end troubles. Evoy held the top spot at the halfway point with Brandon Hagan, Travis Back, Tom Benedict and Dillon Sallows completing the top 5. Kristian Smoke lost control of his machine in turn 2 bringing out the yellow on lap 11. 4 laps later Brad Winters would also have similar issues and bring out the caution once again.  Once the green flag flew for the final restart Evoy built up a comfortable lead on Travis Back and cruised to his 2nd career DIRTcar Sportsman win at MIR. Ronnie Tyo, Tom Benedict and Mike Arquiett completed the top 5.

The DIRTcar Pro Stocks took to the speedway for their 2nd feature of the night with outside pole sitter and reigning Mr. DIRTcar Series champion Louie Jackson getting the lead over David Papineau. On lap 7 Ricky Thompson lost the handle in turn 4 and spun which forced early leader Jackson and Roch Aubin into the outside wall. Thompson was able to return to action while Jackson and Aubin were out of the event. The next restart saw David Papineau hold the top spot with Dave Bissonette 2nd and Ricky Thompson now running in the 3rd spot. Thompson grabbed the lead away from Papineau and started to pull away. With one lap remaining Papineau’s great run came to an end as he broke while running second and headed to the pits. Thompson scored his 2nd win of the night followed by Bissonette, Jody Swamp, Dion Oakes and Preston Mossow.

This coming Friday night 101.5 The FOX and Harley Davidson present the 2nd 20 lap feature from May 20th for the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds along with a regular 25 lap event. DIRTcar Sportsman, DIRTcar Pro Stocks and the first round of the CKON 97.3 FM Bandit Series. The green flag drops at 7:45 pm.

McCullough Fails Write-in Bid

The Allegheny County Elections Department says former County Councilman Chuck McCullough did not get enough votes in the May primary to put his name on the November ballot as the Republican nominee for District Attorney. McCullough needed 500 votes. He received only 103 of the total 1,510 write-in ballots cast. Current District Attorney Stephen Zappala, who is a Democrat, picked up 296 write-in votes from Republicans. There were 1,111 write in votes cast or “scattered” candidates.

Zappala received 104,165 votes in the Democratic primary and will run unopposed for the District Attorney’s seat in November. 696 write-in votes were cast in that primary race.

McCullough launched his write-in efforts just days before the primary. He also was running in the County Executive race. He lost that bid to D. Raja 32,486 to 12,819.

The elections department will launch a recount Wednesday of the ballots cast in the Democratic Commonwealth Court Primary election. That race is being recounted statewide. Katherine Boockvar edged out Barbara Ernsberger by just 2,116 votes or .341%. The slim margin triggered an automatic recount. In Allegheny county Ernsberger gathered 79.952 votes compared to 23,277 for Boockvar.

Corman: PA Senate Not Tied to $27.3 B Budget Ceiling

The next vote on Pennsylvania’s state budget will take place in the Senate, and the head of the chamber’s Appropriations Committee says he’s looking to increase funding for higher education.

The budget passed by the House this week ups college and university funding by $377 million, compared to Governor Corbett’s initial spending plan. It reduces State System of Higher Education cuts to 15 percent, with state-related schools seeing a 25 percent cut, compared to current funding.

Republican Jake Corman, whose district includes State College, said his chamber might give the schools even more money, when it amends the House spending plan. “I think the House showed a strong commitment toward higher education. We’d like to even a little better, if we possibly could, and show some parity between the State System and the state-related universities. But we’ll review that to see where monies are available to do just that,” he said.

Corman also said the Senate isn’t tied to a $27.3 billion budget, and could increase its spending level. “We’re certainly not locked into any number,” he explained. “We could go lower, we could go higher. But we’ll review their budget, and review the priorities of the Senate, to see what changes – obviously there will be some – that we’d like to make, and then put something together that makes sense for the people of Pennsylvania.”

Both Corbett and House Majority Leader Mike Turzai have vowed not to spend more than $27.3 billion.

Corman is hoping for a Senate budget vote by mid-June, and said Senate Republicans are committed to finishing the process by July 1. “The people of Pennsylvania have been put through enough over the last eight years of having late budgets,” he said. “We’re ahead of schedule and hope to continue that way.”

CTCC’s first 2011 Webisode features Alex Healy

The Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship is pleased to announce that the first Webisode of the season is now online on our YouTube Channel and on our official Website.

Even though last year's Webisode series was a huge success, the President of CTCC, John Bondar decided to make some changes to the concept and take it to a different level. "This year, our Webisode series will be much more focused and much more in dept. Our goal is to present what truly reflects the passion of CTCC competitors", says Bondar.

Webisode 1 profiles Alex Healy of Alex Healy Racing. Last Season, Alex and his family made the decision to sign up with one of the most competitive teams in Canada, Lombardi Honda Racing, with the hope of competing for the Championship. It was a tough year for Healy as he was caught up and overwhelmed with the media attention around the team!

"Sitting in the big yellow Civic, under the big black tent with crew everywhere, media everywhere, I let it get to my head a bit. But this year, definitely much more humble and definitely determined to do really well this season", declares Healy.

To find out more about his story, watch the first Webisode by logging on to the CTCC YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/user/canadiantouringcar or on the Website's home page at www.touringcar.ca

Hard Head Patrols Resume

With the return of summer and bike riding season, the Hard Head Patrol from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is once again hitting the streets. Children’s Director of Trauma and Injury Barbara Gaines says about 70 employee volunteers will be on the streets watching for young bikers without helmets. If they find one the child will be given a coupon to attend one of ten free bike helmet fittings where experts give the juvenile a new helmet and teach them how to properly wear it.

Gaines says every year the emergency room staff admits 150 – 175 kids who suffer head injuries while riding their bikes. She says 85% of those injures could have been prevent if the child would have been wearing a helmet.

The volunteers also hand out rewards for kids wearing their helmets. This year it is a Giant Eagle cookie card. Gaines says it is important to also give an incentive to wear the protective gear.

Last year the hospital handed out 1,700 helmets during the Hard Head summer program and another 1,000 helmets through other efforts. Volunteers also handed out 2,500 reward cards.

Gaines says ay child who comes to a fitting event without a helmet will be given one. She says the coupons simply serve as a good reminder for the kids and their parents.

This summer’s first Hard Head helmet fitting event will be held at the Kohl’s Department store in Robinson from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. A full list of fitting can be found online.

Response Mixed to Bill Speeding up Solar Usage

Pennsylvania State Representative Chris Ross says the state has done to good of a job in encouraging the production of solar power. The Republican from Chester County says now there is too much of the renewable energy being produced in the state and not enough buyers. To remedy that Ross has introduced a series of bills that would force electric companies to buy more solar energy from Pennsylvania sources.

“It was probably an over complication to use two forms of stimulus at the same time. We disrupted the market place, now it’s time for us to stabilize that market place,” says Ross. In 2004 the state set the consumption mandates and in 2008 the state offered $80 million in funding for solar energy production projects.

Ross’s bill would speed up incremental steps included in the mandate that electric companies get .5% of their energy from solar by 2021. The bill also forces the electric companies to buy from Pennsylvania sources rather than out of state sources. “I see it as a correction for a distortion that unfortunately we ourselves created,” says Ross.

PennFuture President Jan Jarrett praises the bill. She says she hopes business will soon be able to sell their credits for a price that will encourage more solar production. The price of those credits dropped as supply outstripped demand.

Penn Power spokesperson Scott Surgeoner says he is in favor of using electricity produced from renewable sources but he says he wants to make sure it is done n a way that does not negatively impact the rates paid by Pennsylvania customers.

Ross’s solar jobs bill has 70 cosponsors.

365 Days, 100 Films #23 - Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

Grave of the Fireflies, 1988.

Directed by Isao Takahata.
Featuring the voice talents of J. Robert Spencer, Rhoda Chrosite, Amy Jones and Veronica Taylor.

SYNOPSIS:

A boy and his younger sister struggle to survive in war-torn Japan during World War II.

"Yes, it's a cartoon, and the kids have eyes like saucers, but it belongs on any list of the greatest war films ever made." -Roger Ebert

Seita is a pre-teenager in Japan who has just lived through World War Two. The film opens on him as he slowly passes away, homeless and starving in a train station. His war is over as he utters “Setsuko” with his last breath. He whispers it in the same way Kane spoke ‘Rosebud’. The camera tracks back as two janitors start to tidy him away. The shot’s increased scope reveals many more like him, supported by the station’s numerous pillars. Commuters consider them a nuisance.

Seita takes a ghostly red form and begins to wonder through his life during the war. Grave of the Fireflies is animated, so these moments aren’t ruined by warped special effects. Those at Studio Ghibli imbue more humanity in their subjects than most live action films can muster with their claims to truth. Seita boards a train that will proceed to call at events in his past. It’s so he can understand what has happened and how he ended the way he did. Only then can he finally be free of his guilt.

These flashbacks start at Seita’s home with his mother and young sister. The latter is his ‘rosebud’ – five-year-old Setsuko. The comforts of home and family are in stark contrast to the previous opening scene of Seita’s death. American planes are dropping napalm canisters over their city. Most of the homes are built from wood. They never stood a chance.

Seita and Setsuko become separated from their mother during the air raid. They take cover away from the city and are unharmed, but their mother sat like a duck in the local shelter. They reunite at a makeshift hospital in a levelled city that doesn’t have enough medicine or staff. Seita’s mother is so badly injured, it wouldn’t make a difference if they did. She looks as though her eyes have been seared clean off. Her lips are two swollen sausages and her skin is replaced with blood-soaked bandages. Seita doesn’t let Setsuko see. He tells her that mother’s quite ill so they’re off to stay with their aunt. Seita has decided to shoulder the pain exclusively, and he continues this way until his death. His protectiveness appears noble now, but will become selfish and harmful soon. As they leave we see mother’s body being lifted upon a bonfire. Maggots and flies already feast away.

Their aunt holds a grudge against the orphans. Seita and Setsuko come from a military family, living with more generous rations than their relatives. That Seita and Setsuko do nothing but play like children all day also frustrates the aunt. Her husband and daughter work constantly to support the war effort. But what can the brother and sister do? Their mother has just died and are without a home. Their father is a Navy man from who they haven’t heard in so long. Go to school, their aunt insensitively suggests. It burnt down, replies Setsuko.

By default, Seita is now the head of the family. A very small family, but at least he still has that. Exhausted by the pestering aunt, he pawns his mother’s clothes and withdraws the family savings so he can support Setsuko alone. They find an abandoned air raid shelter near a lake and, like children playing ‘house’, plan the rooms of their new home.

Money, however, quickly becomes worthless as the Japanese currency falters. It’s all about trading needed item for needed item now. As they live outside the system, in their cave by a river, Seita and Setsuko aren’t entitled to food rations. Setsuko begins to show signs of illness. She scratches a lot and has sores on her back. Sometimes she faints. Dependent child characters often become tiresome or annoying. Not Setsuko. It’s the way she’s drawn clutching her doll and wearing her hat. She’s so endearing and helpless you want to rescue her yourself. It’s why Seita’s relationship with her is so heartbreaking.

She becomes delirious from hunger, chewing marbles and making rice cakes out of mud. Seita does all he can to save her. He takes food from people’s empty houses during air raids and steals fruit from farmer’s fields. But he never considers going back to his aunt, even when their situation becomes increasingly desperate. She’s a horrible woman, but she could have saved them.

It’s almost as though it’s because of a hidden selfishness. Seita has invested all his loss, of his home, mother and father, into caring for Setsuko. If he lets someone else take over, or even merely share, he would have failed her and his deceased family. His love is smothering, but he does everything for that girl. He’s only a kid – how’s he supposed to know any better?

The film itself is based on a semi-autobiographical novel. The author lost his sister to malnutrition at the end of the war too, but unlike Seita, he survived. He blamed himself for his sister’s death and wrote the book to make amends.

This is the one Studio Ghibli film for which Disney does not hold the distribution rights. The book’s publishers do. It’s fitting, in a way. Grave of the Fireflies should to be separate from the rest of Ghibli’s canon.

There’s no overt anti-war agenda because the story is such a human one. These aren’t soldiers or politicians, they’re civilians. But in focusing on and attempting to deal with such a personal tragedy, Grave of the Fireflies becomes as powerful a statement against war as Wilfred Owen’s Anthem for Doomed Youth or Roberto Rossellini’s Germany, Year Zero.
